What are Scholarship Committees Looking For...
Impressing committee members
There are many different types of scholarships but the ones that we will focus on are the ones that you have to apply for as an individual. These scholarships require students to submit an application form in order to be considered.
They may be offered by private organizations, charitable organizations or post secondary institutes. In the case of individually applied for scholarships, students usually must provide: a completed application form, an official transcript [which can be obtained through Student Services], and one or two letters of reference [generally from a teacher and/or a community leader].
In some cases an interview may be part of the application process. In some other cases, all that is required is that you submit an essay.
Tips:
- Extra Curricular Activities - Academic achievement will always be important but it will rarely be the only criteria. Involvement should be varied
and should span a long period of time.
- School Spirit - It is always impressive to show your interest in your school and your participation in the
pursuit of success for your school.
- Leadership - Have you demonstrated leadership in or out of your school? Many scholarships will be directed towards the future leaders
of our society. Many scholarships view this as a requirement.
- Learn the Motivation of the sponsor - who is offering the scholarship? What sort of group, society or business is this? Is there a
clue in this information that can help you determine what they might be looking for?
